• How to Perfect Your Punch During Boxing Classes

Going along to boxing classes is an awesome way to get a fun, motivating full body workout and you’ll walk out feeling invigorated – not to mention sore the next day! When it comes to perfecting your punch, practice makes perfect and with the right guidance you’ll be hitting like a pro in no time.

At KĀYA, we have extensive experience providing boxing workouts for beginners all the way up to advanced and we’ll be looking at how you can perfect your punching technique to get the most out of your class.

    Focus on your stance

Without the correct boxing stance, you’re going to struggle to perfect your punching technique. Take the time to familiarise yourself with the right stance to give yourself the best start. If you’re right handed, your left shoulder needs to face your opponent and vice versa if you’re left handed. Stand with your knees slightly bent and your legs a hip distance apart, left foot pointed at your opponent. Remember to keep your chin down and relax into your stance.

    Slow it down

When it comes to your punching technique, a lot of people assume that faster is better. However, it’s much more effective to slow down your movement so you get it just right. You need to use your entire body weight when throwing a punch and if you go too fast, your body won’t be able to keep up. Speed doesn’t equal power so pay attention to syncing your turn and your punch for optimal results.

    Hands up, elbows in

When throwing a punch, you need to remember to keep both hands up to protect your face and keep your elbows tucked in at the ribs. A common mistake people make is to have their elbows pointing out when throwing a punch so get into the habit of keeping them in at all times – this leads to a more powerful punch. As an extra tip, don’t overreach when punching. You should aim to land your punch before your arm is fully extended to give your hit more power.

    Get some guidance

If you’re really looking to improve your punch, take the time to speak to your instructor. They’ll be able to help you out with the correct technique and suggest changes as necessary. Remember, your instructor will be walking around throughout the class keeping an eye on everyone’s form so chances are they’ll make suggestions without you even having to ask!
