A Woman Doing An Upwards Facing Dog At Kaya Health Clubs Melbourne

It’s a very common misconception that you need to be flexible before you can start yoga. This isn’t true at all – you can come along no matter what your level of flexibility is. However, it is true that regular yoga practice will increase your flexibility over time. Here at KĀYA, we offer introductory yoga courses at our Melbourne CBD studio, along with a number of different yoga classes, and are here to share the benefits of the increased flexibility offered by yoga.

    Improves Posture

One of the symptoms of modern society is poor posture and flexibility has a big part to play as your tight muscles impact on the alignment of the spine. We also tend to hold a lot of tension in our postural muscles which is a hard habit to break. With regular yoga, the focus on stretching and relaxing the postural muscles means that as you become more flexible and your posture improves as everything begins to balance out and relax.

    Reduces risk of injury

There’s a reason why athletes often to turn to yoga for injury recovery. This low impact form of exercise works to slowly improve flexibility and can make you less injury prone by making your muscles more pliable. Tight muscles and stiff ligaments are common features in individuals who tend to suffer from regular injuries as their limited range of motion means it’s easy for them to overextend and cause damage. Loosening everything up through regular yoga practice can help you be injury free into the future.

    Creates muscular balance

Most of us experience some level of muscular imbalance which means that some of our muscles are underworked while other muscles are overworked. Over time, muscular imbalance can lead to injury. Improving your flexibility through yoga can help to correct these muscular imbalances as tension is released in overworked muscles and less developed muscles are activated.

    Increases functionality

You’ll be surprised at how much easier day to day tasks are, such as bending over to pick something up or reaching something in a high cupboard, when you have improved flexibility. This is because as your flexibility improves, so does your range of motion. Yoga will help build up your flexibility over time and even if you had limited flexibility to begin with, you’ll find yourself with improved functionality over time in your daily life.
