When it comes to starting out with reformer Pilates, our members often have a few questions. And you know what? We love to answer them! It’s important to us that our members are well informed and feel comfortable about going along to class. With that in mind, today we’ll be answering some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes our reformer Pilates classes.
What should I wear?
Whatever you feel comfortable in! Most people stick with tights and a comfortable top when they go along to Pilates but the choice is yours. Just make sure you wear something that allows for a full range of movement so you’re comfortable when going through the various exercises. Also, don’t wear anything too loose when going along to Pilates reformer class – you don’t want clothing getting caught up in the springs.
How often should I do Pilates?
It’s completely up to you. There are no rules about how frequently you should come along to class, although it’s great to be consistent if you can so you can begin to experience results. A lot of people start with one class a week and then enjoy it so much that they work up to attending more frequently.
Can I alternate between mat and reformer Pilates?
Yes, there’s no rule saying you have to stick to one or the other. In fact, a lot of people love to mix it up by alternating between mat and reformer Pilates as they offer different workouts which is perfect to keep things interesting. As time goes on, you might find that you prefer one form of Pilates – it just depends on what works best for you!
Do I have to be flexible before I can start Pilates?
No, you definitely don’t need to be flexible before you start mat or reformer Pilates. You’ll quickly find that your range of motion improves as you go on but Pilates caters for all levels when it comes to flexibility. Don’t force your body to over stretch when you’re doing the exercises – everyone has a different range when it comes to flexibility and you don’t want to cause an injury.
What if I have an injury?
If you have an injury, often you can still attend your Pilates classes. In fact, Pilates is often recommended for injury recovery. However, make sure you get clearance for your doctor first and let your teacher know before class that you have an injury. It may be recommended to you to have some individual clinical Pilates sessions before you go on to group classes.
